Ended up getting the Fostex FR-2LE for an amazing deal for all the stuff that came with it. Practically new just no original box. Paid 300 bucks for it.

Yeah it would still work just something I would prefer on the top(when in a bag). But your right it would work just fine.

you still have meters on the front when it is in the bag seeing the screen isn't a deal breakers I only need to see the record light and meters then I am good to go,

Yeah I have heard great things about it but bag use is my only problem because the screen is on the side verses being on top(this is when in a bag).

The Fostex Fr2le is a pretty good recorder for the price. I just bought one to add to my rental inventory and rented to some film students doing a Documentary. I played with it for an afternoon and was impressed by the audio recording it did via line level. The mics pres were also acceptable as well. Only thing I didn't like about it was that line input is only available via 1/4in connectors and is only -10 not +4. But overall a great recorder for the $425.00 new I paid for it on Ebay I bought some rechargeable AA and charger for it so for under $500.00 it is a great value.
